Edna Zaugg Sutton, class of 1931, passed away December 11, 2017. Edna attended the International Business College and retired from International Harvester. Survivors include two children; 19 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren. Patricia Beall, class of 1934, died November 11, 2017. She continued her education at Duke University. After working as a Red Cross volunteer for three years in England, France and Germany during World War II, she settled in Indianapolis where she got a master’s degree in social work. Patricia had a lengthy career as Director of the Social Service Department at Indiana University Medical Center and taught at Indiana University School of Social Work. Phyllis Culver Fisher, class of 1938, passed away January 22, 2018 in Bonita Springs, FL. She is survived by her daughter, Sally Pepin; and two grandchildren. Mary Elizabeth Held Berning class of 1939, died November 1, 2016 in Oxnard, CA. After her husband Arnold’s death, she moved to California in 1998 to be near her daughter, Sharon Osborne. Exciting News for SSHS

It has been announced that Principal Carlton Mable will be leaving at the end of the school year. He has accepted an Administrative position with FWCS, and will be moving downtown.  We will miss him, and wish him much success in his new position.  The new principal was also announced this week, Mr. Adam Swinford will be taking over the reins at SSHS and comes to us from Miami Middle School.  We wish him a warm welcome and look forward to working with him in our efforts to aid the students and faculty. More excitement and many changes are coming for South Side as starting with the new school year, our feeder schools, Whitney Young Early Childhood Center, Weisser Park Elementary and Memorial Park Middle School will be joining South Side as they collaborate with Discovery to implement STEAM (Science, Technology, English, Arts and Math) Culture in all of these schools.  It will be an exciting year as teachers are trained and new courses implemented.   The first Leadership Retreat was held Thursday, March 22, at FWCS Family and Community Engagement Center.  Approximately 70 people attended this retreat and included community members, school board members, school administrators, teachers, principals and parents.  By their… Read More

Honor for a Former Archer

Demarcus Beasley left Fort Wayne in 1998 after two years at South Side to join the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.  Beasley, a 5-foot-8 defender, has been on the U.S. national team since 2001 and has played with the Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamo since 2014.  He has appeared in 126 national team games, including a record four World Cups, and scored 17 goals. He also had club stints with the Chicago Fire, PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands, Manchester City in England, the Rangers in Scotland, Hannover in Germany and Puebla in Mexico.   The induction ceremony is scheduled for March 3 at the Renaissance Hotel in Carmel.  Congratulations to our former Archer…

Ruth Eylenberg Brake, class of 1937, died August 22, 2017 in Fort Wayne. She was an active member of the Cedar Creek Women’s Club and Trinity English Lutheran Church. She is survived by a son, step-daughter, granddaughter, grandson, and niece. Nadine Doty Gardner, class of 1938, died September 25, 2017 in Fort Wayne. Nadine retired from the Kroger Company in 1981. She enjoyed gardening, reading, bowling, and volunteering. Surviving are her daughters, as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Eleanor GernandRodenbeck, class of 1938, died October 13, 2017 in Fort Wayne. Eleanor was a retired elementary school teacher who enjoyed gardening, reading, and following current events. Surviving are two daughters, a son, and two grandsons. Valeria Martin Talerico, class of 1938, passed away September 29, 2017 at Parkview Hospital. She is survived by granddaughter, Cindy Biggs; grandchildren Lori Boutwell and Adam Krauter; daughter-in-law, Sharon Talerico; and many nieces and nephews. June E. SSHS Halloween Program a Success

The first SSHS Community Outreach Halloween celebration at South Side was a huge success.  The school hosted over 2000 future students and their families, and after running out of 800 lbs of candy in the first hour, Mr. Mable had to make an emergency run to CVS and Walmart to restock the various stations.  The festivities were the result of the hard work of students and staff who volunteered their time to decorate the school, staff the various activities, and help everyone enjoy a fun filled, SAFE evening of Trick and Treating..  Thanks South Side, you make us proud.

David Link

David Link joined the U. S. Navy in 1944 and was subsequently sent to Purdue University and later to the University of Virginia in the Navy’s V-12 program. He returned to Fort Wayne where he joined the News-Sentinel as a copy editor and reporter, working under Bud Manth, father of former principal Jenny Manth, until 1951 when he was called to serve in the Korean War. David returned to the News-Sentinel for one year and then moved to the Milwaukee Journal as a real estate writer before he became a home builder and later went into the mortgage banking business. In 1970 David became senior editor of Professional Builder Magazine, a Chicago based national publication that focused on housing and light construction and was subsequently named editor and then editorial director and associate publisher. In 1986, he became vice president of Cahners Publishing Company that published 40 some magazines centered on the trades. He retired in 1991 to Arizona where he became the first president of the Santa Cruz Valley chapter of Habitat for Humanity. John Richard Samsen

John Richard Samsen served in the Army Air Force before obtaining a degree in Aero Engineering at Purdue University. He is known worldwide for his outstanding realistic automobile paintings as well as his contributions to the design of many cars that are now considered classics, including the 1955 Ford Thunderbird. His car art has won many awards such as first place in automotive fine art competition at the ‘Eyes on Classic Design’ show at the Edsel Ford estate in Grosse Point and is exhibited in numerous museums including the Boston Museum of Fine Art. He also paints award-winning landscapes and seascapes at this Hilton Head area studio. John Samsen had a career from 1952 through 1976 at Ford and Chrysler Corp. where he worked on the styling of such cars as the 1955 Thunderbird, the Ford experimental car D-523 Cougar, the 1957 FORD cars, and Chrysler Corp. production and show cars including the Barracudas, Desotos, Roadrunners, GTX, and many others. Ford’s little known Mercury D-524 served as an engineering test car before being sent to Hollywood to star in movies. Beverly Stanton McKenna

In the summer after her freshman year at Indiana University, Beverly sought an internship at The Journal Gazette but was denied because they had never had a “colored” reporter. Angry and discouraged, she returned to school and changed her major to English. Upon graduation from Tennessee State University, she taught at Kekionga Junior High before moving to Washington DC to serve as a public relations specialist for a social service agency. Mid Seventies, McKenna moved to New Orleans with her husband Dwight, and in 1985, they founded The New Orleans Tribune, a monthly publication devoted to, and an influential voice for, social justice and empowerment for the Black community. She had returned to her passion for writing and reporting. Along with the demands of running a publishing company, Stanton McKenna pursued other interests. She and her husband are real estate investors and provide jobs and economic opportunities for African Americans through these endeavors. They also founded two museums—one that showcases African American art and the other, the Le Musee De fpc, that commemorates the achievements and contributions of free people of. Thomas A Felger

After receiving his MD degree from Indiana University, Tom A Felger M.D. interned in Dayton Ohio and then served two years with the Second Marine Division at Camp LeJeune, NC. He returned to his home town in 1971 and started a rewarding 29 year practice in family medicine. After his relocation to South Bend, Indiana, Tom taught at a Family Medicine Residency and served as County Health Officer for St Joseph County. While living in Fort Wayne, Tom served as president of the Fort Wayne-Allen County Medical Society and on the board of trustees of the Indiana State Medical Association as well as the Indiana Academy of Family Physicians and the American Academy of Family Physicians. He was president of the Inter Agency Drug Abuse Council which, in collaboration with the Junior League of Fort Wayne, created the McMillen Health Center; He was elected president of the McMillen Health Center board in 1986. Many other medical-related organizations have benefitted from his leadership including the Three Rivers Prenatal Clinic, Park Center, and the Family Medicine Departments at Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne and St Joseph Hospital in South Bend.
