In Memoriam – Winter 2019

Ron Holmes, a longtime high school basketball coach and South Side teacher, died December 4, 2018 in Fort Wayne. Mary Jo Allen Briggs, class of 1936, died August 21, 2018 in Hot Springs, Arkansas.  She was a talented violinist who appreciated the musical grounding she received in the South Side Orchestra.  She played with the Ball State orchestra when she enrolled there as a student. Marriage and children interrupted her education plans but she was able to return to Ball State and graduate with a B.A. in 1956 and a M.A. in 1960.  Mary Jo taught at Smart School and Lane Junior High School in Fort Wayne.  After retiring to Florida, she was the concertmistress of both the Venice and Charlotte Symphonies.  Mary Jo is survived by three of her children, Jerry, Danny, and Johnny; and her grandchildren. Charles L. Dumford, class of 1938, passed away September 29, 2018.  Charles worked at Bowser for 21 years and then at Wayne High School for 23 years.  He is survived by his daughter, Peggy Bender; six grand-children; and eight great-grandchildren. SSHS Hosts 2nd Annual Halloween Party

The 2nd Annual Halloween “Trick or Treat” “Inside the Ivy” was held Wednesday, October 31st, at South Side High School. This year’s event was extremely successful, with over 1700 attendees from our feeder schools, with family members in attendance, and other members of the South Side Community, the school hosted over 3500 people…  We sincerely hope that this annual event will attract more students to our South Side Family.

In Memoriam – Summer/Fall 2018

Archie J. James, who served 33+ years as building engineer, July 8, 2018 at Kingston Residence. He is survived by his daughter, Betsy Motter ’74; son, Archie F. James; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Ruth B. Robbins, former English Teacher and Librarian, May 24, 2018 at Sycamore Village in Fort Wayne. Charles W. Masel, class of 1931, died July 20, 2018 in Lake Placid, FL. He was an active member of his church, Masonic and Scottish Rite Orders, and LEAP. Survivors include daughters, Marlene Smith and Betsy Noyes; son, Michael Cross; three grandchildren and two great-grandsons. Betty “Eisy” Eisenacher, class of 1938, passed away July 2, 2018 at Northwoods Village. She was voted best athlete while at South Side and attended so many games that her bleacher seat was dedicated to her and she was given a Lifetime Sports Pass. Betty was a renowned pitcher for the Bob Inn softball team, leading them to several state championships. She also played and coached basketball for GE where she worked for 41 years. In Memoriam – Spring 2018

Edna Zaugg Sutton, class of 1931, passed away December 11, 2017. Edna attended the International Business College and retired from International Harvester. Survivors include two children; 19 grandchildren; numerous great-grandchildren; and great-great-grandchildren. Patricia Beall, class of 1934, died November 11, 2017. She continued her education at Duke University. After working as a Red Cross volunteer for three years in England, France and Germany during World War II, she settled in Indianapolis where she got a master’s degree in social work. Patricia had a lengthy career as Director of the Social Service Department at Indiana University Medical Center and taught at Indiana University School of Social Work. Phyllis Culver Fisher, class of 1938, passed away January 22, 2018 in Bonita Springs, FL. She is survived by her daughter, Sally Pepin; and two grandchildren. Exciting News for SSHS

It has been announced that Principal Carlton Mable will be leaving at the end of the school year. He has accepted an Administrative position with FWCS, and will be moving downtown.  We will miss him, and wish him much success in his new position.  The new principal was also announced this week, Mr. Adam Swinford will be taking over the reins at SSHS and comes to us from Miami Middle School.  We wish him a warm welcome and look forward to working with him in our efforts to aid the students and faculty. More excitement and many changes are coming for South Side as starting with the new school year, our feeder schools, Whitney Young Early Childhood Center, Weisser Park Elementary and Memorial Park Middle School will be joining South Side as they collaborate with Discovery to implement STEAM (Science, Technology, English, Arts and Math) Culture in all of these schools.  It will be an exciting year as teachers are trained and new courses implemented.   The first Leadership Retreat was held Thursday, March 22, at FWCS Family and Community Engagement Center.  Approximately 70 people attended this retreat and included community members, school board members, school administrators, teachers, principals and parents.  By their… Read More

Honor for a Former Archer

Demarcus Beasley left Fort Wayne in 1998 after two years at South Side to join the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.  Beasley, a 5-foot-8 defender, has been on the U.S. national team since 2001 and has played with the Major League Soccer’s Houston Dynamo since 2014.  He has appeared in 126 national team games, including a record four World Cups, and scored 17 goals. He also had club stints with the Chicago Fire, PSV Eindhoven in the Netherlands, Manchester City in England, the Rangers in Scotland, Hannover in Germany and Puebla in Mexico.   The induction ceremony is scheduled for March 3 at the Renaissance Hotel in Carmel.  Congratulations to our former Archer…

Ruth Eylenberg Brake, class of 1937, died August 22, 2017 in Fort Wayne. She was an active member of the Cedar Creek Women’s Club and Trinity English Lutheran Church. She is survived by a son, step-daughter, granddaughter, grandson, and niece. Nadine Doty Gardner, class of 1938, died September 25, 2017 in Fort Wayne. Nadine retired from the Kroger Company in 1981. She enjoyed gardening, reading, bowling, and volunteering. Surviving are her daughters, as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Eleanor GernandRodenbeck, class of 1938, died October 13, 2017 in Fort Wayne. Eleanor was a retired elementary school teacher who enjoyed gardening, reading, and following current events. Surviving are two daughters, a son, and two grandsons. Valeria Martin Talerico, class of 1938, passed away September 29, 2017 at Parkview Hospital. She is survived by granddaughter, Cindy Biggs; grandchildren Lori Boutwell and Adam Krauter; daughter-in-law, Sharon Talerico; and many nieces and nephews. June E. SSHS Halloween Program a Success

The first SSHS Community Outreach Halloween celebration at South Side was a huge success.  The school hosted over 2000 future students and their families, and after running out of 800 lbs of candy in the first hour, Mr. Mable had to make an emergency run to CVS and Walmart to restock the various stations.  The festivities were the result of the hard work of students and staff who volunteered their time to decorate the school, staff the various activities, and help everyone enjoy a fun filled, SAFE evening of Trick and Treating..  Thanks South Side, you make us proud.
