In Memoriam – Winter 2020

Leona Zweig Rosenberg, former faculty member, died December 12, 2019 in Chicago. Donald E. Waldrop, former faculty member and coach, died September 10, 2019 in St. Augustine, FL. Margery Quackenbush Heinzelmann, class of 1939, died September 12 in Columbia City. Warren W. Schueler, class of 1939, passed away October 8, 2019.  Warren served in the U.S. Army during WWII.  After the war, he ran Schueler Appliances with his father and son.  He was a long-time member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club, 100% Club and Emmanuel Lutheran Church.  Survivors include his son, Mitchell; brother, Neal ’44; stepdaughters, Kristeen English, Kathleen Wedler; stepsons, Richard, Stephen and Jeffrey Weaver; 13 step-grandchildren; and 23 step-great-grandchildren. Mary Wetzel Allmandinger, class of 1940, died November 3, 2019.  Mary was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church where she was actively involved with quilting, flower planting, Bible study, and Sunday School.  She had worked at GE and retired from FWCS.  She is survived by her sons, Thomas and Steven; daughter, Sue Weterick; four grandchildren and three great-granddaughters. Centennial Scholar

Centennial Scholar Award In June 2022 South Side High School will graduate its 100th Class of Seniors. Since opening in the fall of 1921, South Side has graduated many outstanding students who played key roles in the monumental events of the 20th century. We hope that trend continues throughout the 21st Century. To ensure that our graduates have the resources to pursue higher education and to celebrate the school’s centennial, the South Side High School Foundation has approved a special one-time scholarship for a member of the Class of 2022. The Centennial Scholar award will go to one graduating senior based on 1) His/her academic achievements, 2) Involvement in school and community activities, 3) Demonstration of leadership skills, 4) Demonstration of significant financial need and 5) Favorable feedback from scholarship committee interviewers, teachers and school administrators. Our goal is to award a minimum of $2,000 annually up to 4 years to one graduating senior of the Class of 2022. In order to renew the scholarship each year, the student will need to provide proof of continued enrollment in a qualified four-year college making adequate progress toward a degree. In Memoriam Summer 2019

Dorothy L. Schwier (Lahrman)Schray, class of 1936, died April 27, 2019 in Spring, TX.  Dorothy was a teenager during the Great Depression and worked to help her brothers and sister support their mother and family.  She worked retail sales, modeled fur coats, and was training to be a buyer for women’s clothes.  Dorothy’s life took a different path when she married Charles Lahrman in 1941 and followed him through various postings while he served in the Air Force. Charles passed away in 1971 and Dorothy married Lyle Schray.  They had 25 wonderful years together before his passing.  Survivors include her daughter, Becky Holland; daughter-in-law, Linda Lahrman; five grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Charles O. Long, class of 1940, passed away February 9, 2019.  At the time of his death, Chuck was living in Ocala, FL. His college years at the University of Michigan were interrupted by World War II where he served as an air force pilot instructor and then radar navigator for a B-29 bomber team.  He flew several missions in the Pacific theater out of Saipan.  Chuck fondly recalled flying missions over POW camps to drop aid-barrels immediately following the ending of the war.  He… Read More

Every year your SSHS Alumni Association along with the SSHS Foundation present  scholarships to several outstanding students.  Awards night was held Tuesday, May 7th, and thanks to the generous contributions of your fellow alumni, SSHS Friends, and  SSHS family we were able to award $29,000.00 in scholarship money to these outstanding Archers. In Memoriam – Spring 2019

Phyllis Bush, former faculty member and English Department Chair, died March 19, 2019 in Fort Wayne.  She is survived by her wife, Donna, son David; and two grandsons. Kenneth W. Hullinger, faculty member for 29 years, died at his home in Leo, IN on March 9, 2019.  He is survived by his wife, Charlotte; three children; and four grandsons. Herman “Earl” Weinert, former math teacher, died April 12, 2019 at Lutheran Life Villages. Margaret Foland Bauer, class of 1936, died February 22, 2019.  Margaret was the first female in the marching band when it went co-ed in 1933.  She worked at Stillman’s Department Store and Montgomery Ward.  She was a member of the Fort Wayne Hobby and Collectors Guild and at the age of 100 she was still an avid candy maker.  Margaret is survived by her daughter, Judy Parker, two grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Frederick O. Brubaker, class of 1936, died March 28, 2019.  Fred served in the United States Army before working at many places such as Fort Wayne Blue Print, General Electric, Lincoln Reproduction, Bible Truth Publishing, and Noll Press Printing.  He built his own home on Winchester Road and he loved to travel with… Read More

Founder’s Day

Fort Wayne Area PTA Council Founders’ Day Dinner is being hosted at South Side High School on Thursday, February 28, 2019. There is a vendor fair starting at 6:00 for area PTA Boards to peruse. Doors open for dinner at 6:30, with dinner at 7:00. Entertainment will be provided by various Feeder schools and SSHS family clubs, including Memorial Park Swing Choir and the Kekionga Steel Drummers. Speakers for this occasion will be Superintendent of FWCS Dr. Wendy Robinson, Principal Adam Swinford, and the PTA Council President. Admission is $25, and there will be an 80’s theme, with dancing, musical performances, and additional activities. Everyone is welcome, and may dress accordingly. Hope to see you there….

In Memoriam – Winter 2019

Ron Holmes, a longtime high school basketball coach and South Side teacher, died December 4, 2018 in Fort Wayne. Mary Jo Allen Briggs, class of 1936, died August 21, 2018 in Hot Springs, Arkansas.  She was a talented violinist who appreciated the musical grounding she received in the South Side Orchestra.  She played with the Ball State orchestra when she enrolled there as a student. Marriage and children interrupted her education plans but she was able to return to Ball State and graduate with a B.A. in 1956 and a M.A. in 1960.  Mary Jo taught at Smart School and Lane Junior High School in Fort Wayne.  After retiring to Florida, she was the concertmistress of both the Venice and Charlotte Symphonies.  Mary Jo is survived by three of her children, Jerry, Danny, and Johnny; and her grandchildren. Charles L. Dumford, class of 1938, passed away September 29, 2018.  Charles worked at Bowser for 21 years and then at Wayne High School for 23 years.  He is survived by his daughter, Peggy Bender; six grand-children; and eight great-grandchildren. SSHS Hosts 2nd Annual Halloween Party

The 2nd Annual Halloween “Trick or Treat” “Inside the Ivy” was held Wednesday, October 31st, at South Side High School. This year’s event was extremely successful, with over 1700 attendees from our feeder schools, with family members in attendance, and other members of the South Side Community, the school hosted over 3500 people…  We sincerely hope that this annual event will attract more students to our South Side Family.

In Memoriam – Summer/Fall 2018

Archie J. James, who served 33+ years as building engineer, July 8, 2018 at Kingston Residence. He is survived by his daughter, Betsy Motter ’74; son, Archie F. James; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Ruth B. Robbins, former English Teacher and Librarian, May 24, 2018 at Sycamore Village in Fort Wayne. Charles W. Masel, class of 1931, died July 20, 2018 in Lake Placid, FL. He was an active member of his church, Masonic and Scottish Rite Orders, and LEAP. Survivors include daughters, Marlene Smith and Betsy Noyes; son, Michael Cross; three grandchildren and two great-grandsons. Betty “Eisy” Eisenacher, class of 1938, passed away July 2, 2018 at Northwoods Village. She was voted best athlete while at South Side and attended so many games that her bleacher seat was dedicated to her and she was given a Lifetime Sports Pass. Betty was a renowned pitcher for the Bob Inn softball team, leading them to several state championships. She also played and coached basketball for GE where she worked for 41 years.
