In Memoriam – Winter 2021

Ruth Redding Stoll, class of 1934, died December 31, 2020.  Ruth worked for Archway Bakery and Hickory Farms.  She was a volunteer at Lutheran Hospital, Visiting Nurse Hospice and Parkview Gift Shop.  Surviving is her daughter, Nancy Bartol; daughter-in-law Carol Stoll Bruick; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild. Martha Crum Karst, class of 1938, passed away November 28, 2020.  She retired in 1985 after 21 years working for School City of Mishawaka as a secretary for Twin Branch School. Martha is survived by her daughters, Gail Whitehead; Lori Kardell; and Marilou Gilman; six grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren. Alexander A. Azar, class of 1940, died December 17, 2020.  Alex graduated from IU in three years with a business degree and then joined the U.S. Army to serve during World War II.  He started his career by opening a grocery store with his brother, David ’41.  However, he is more well known for opening the Azar’s Big Boy Restaurantsin Fort Wayne and then Marriott Hotels throughout the Midwest.He and his late wife, Norma, also raised a family. Ron Holmes Tribute

On Wednesday November 11, we will dedicate a plaque in the commons honoring Mr. Ron Holmes.  Mr. Holmes is truly one of our legends and deserving of this honor.  I also plan on giving his family members who will be attendance a book with memories submitted by his former students and staff members.  If you have a memory to share with the family about Mr. Holmes please sent it to me to put together for the family.  Please send it to [email protected]. In Memoriam – Summer 2020

David M. Roth, class of 1940, died August 27, 2020.  Dave participated in many sports while at South Side including the mile relay team which broke the school record in 1940.  He was awarded the Kenworthy Trophy for Outstanding Sportsmanship in varsity athletics and was a member of the All-City Football team.  Later Dave received the Distinguished Alumni Award.  During WWII, Dave served in the Pacific as a naval officer on a seagoing amphibious ship that participated in six island invasions.  His ship was the first to land in the Okinawa Campaign and thought to be the first U.S. ship to land on Japanese soil.  After returning from military service, he married Margaret Harrod ’41 and they were together 72 years until her death in 2019.  Dave also attended college earning a B.S. degree in Business Administration.  He had a successful career in real estate.  Dave also found time to be active in many community organizations during his lifetime.  Dave is survived by sons, Greg and John; daughters, Sharon Wartenbe and Kathy Golm; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. 2020 South Side Alumni Association/Foundation Scholarship Recipients

Thanks to the generosity of our South Side Family of Alumni and Friends, we are honored to announce the 12 recipients of the 2020 South Side High School Alumni Association/Foundation Scholarships totaling $29,600. These amazing students have demonstrated a work ethic that has made them outstanding candidates for these Awards, and have shown that they will use their knowledge and education to continue to strive for success. Due to the current Covid-19 situation, we were not able to present the Scholarships at an award ceremony, where they would have been honored in front of classmates, family and friends. In Memoriam – Spring 2020

Jeanette Harlan Lohse, class of 1935, died January 28, 2020.  She taught kindergarten for 50 years, retiring from East Allen County Schools in 1992.  Jeanette was active in various women’s groups at both Plymouth Congregational Church and Taylor Chapel United Methodist Church.  She and her husband, Norman, were married for 62 years before his passing in 2005.  Jeanette is survived by her sister, Betty Harlan Boldt ’40; two children Joan Weber and Jeff Lohse; five grandsons; and seven great-grandchildren. Doris Rahrer Estep, class of 1936, passed away January 8, 2020.  She was an active member of the YMCA and Trinity English Lutheran Church.  Doris is survived by her daughter, Trudy Estep Wray ‘62; five grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and a great-great-granddaughter. Naomi Kline Sutter-McNett, class of 1938, died January 12, 2020.  Naomi worked in the knitting mills early on and then later at Magnavox.  She was a devoted Christian and member of the North Side Missionary Church.  Naomi was talented at crocheting and knitting.  She is survived by her children, Jerrold Sutter and Judy Emley; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and her sister, Dorothy Kline Meyer ’41. As you are aware, we will be celebrating South Side’s Centennial School Year 2021-2022. As part of the festivities, we are planning a Veteran’s Day breakfast, (Nov. 11, 2021) for SSHS Veteran Alumni. In Memoriam – Winter 2020

Leona Zweig Rosenberg, former faculty member, died December 12, 2019 in Chicago. Donald E. Waldrop, former faculty member and coach, died September 10, 2019 in St. Augustine, FL. Margery Quackenbush Heinzelmann, class of 1939, died September 12 in Columbia City. Warren W. Schueler, class of 1939, passed away October 8, 2019.  Warren served in the U.S. Army during WWII.  After the war, he ran Schueler Appliances with his father and son.  He was a long-time member of the Downtown Kiwanis Club, 100% Club and Emmanuel Lutheran Church.  Survivors include his son, Mitchell; brother, Neal ’44; stepdaughters, Kristeen English, Kathleen Wedler; stepsons, Richard, Stephen and Jeffrey Weaver; 13 step-grandchildren; and 23 step-great-grandchildren. Mary Wetzel Allmandinger, class of 1940, died November 3, 2019.  Mary was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church where she was actively involved with quilting, flower planting, Bible study, and Sunday School.  She had worked at GE and retired from FWCS.  She is survived by her sons, Thomas and Steven; daughter, Sue Weterick; four grandchildren and three great-granddaughters. Centennial Scholar

Centennial Scholar Award In June 2022 South Side High School will graduate its 100th Class of Seniors. Since opening in the fall of 1921, South Side has graduated many outstanding students who played key roles in the monumental events of the 20th century. We hope that trend continues throughout the 21st Century. To ensure that our graduates have the resources to pursue higher education and to celebrate the school’s centennial, the South Side High School Foundation has approved a special one-time scholarship for a member of the Class of 2022. The Centennial Scholar award will go to one graduating senior based on 1) His/her academic achievements, 2) Involvement in school and community activities, 3) Demonstration of leadership skills, 4) Demonstration of significant financial need and 5) Favorable feedback from scholarship committee interviewers, teachers and school administrators. Our goal is to award a minimum of $2,000 annually up to 4 years to one graduating senior of the Class of 2022. In order to renew the scholarship each year, the student will need to provide proof of continued enrollment in a qualified four-year college making adequate progress toward a degree. In Memoriam Summer 2019

Dorothy L. Schwier (Lahrman)Schray, class of 1936, died April 27, 2019 in Spring, TX.  Dorothy was a teenager during the Great Depression and worked to help her brothers and sister support their mother and family.  She worked retail sales, modeled fur coats, and was training to be a buyer for women’s clothes.  Dorothy’s life took a different path when she married Charles Lahrman in 1941 and followed him through various postings while he served in the Air Force. Charles passed away in 1971 and Dorothy married Lyle Schray.  They had 25 wonderful years together before his passing.  Survivors include her daughter, Becky Holland; daughter-in-law, Linda Lahrman; five grandchildren; several step-grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Charles O. Long, class of 1940, passed away February 9, 2019.  At the time of his death, Chuck was living in Ocala, FL. His college years at the University of Michigan were interrupted by World War II where he served as an air force pilot instructor and then radar navigator for a B-29 bomber team.  He flew several missions in the Pacific theater out of Saipan.  Chuck fondly recalled flying missions over POW camps to drop aid-barrels immediately following the ending of the war.  He… Read More
